As we step into May, we are proud to participate in Electrical Safety Month—an important time to focus on safeguarding our homes and workplaces from electrical hazards. This year, The Electrical Safety Foundation (ESFI) is placing a special emphasis on a technology that powers our daily lives: lithium-ion batteries.

Understanding Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are integral to many devices we use every day—from smartphones and laptops to power tools and electric vehicles. While they are incredibly efficient, it's crucial to handle these batteries with care to ensure safety and extend their lifespan.

Safety Tips for Lithium-Ion Batteries

1. Only use manufacturer-provided or authorized batteries and charging equipment. All equipment should be certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory.

2. Remove the battery or charging device from power once charging is complete to avoid overheating

3. Keep batteries and charge them at room temperature. Issues can occur below 32° F or above 105° F

4. Keep batteries and devices from heat sources or anything that can catch fire

5. Do not store batteries in vehicles or direct sunlight

6. All maintenance on batteries or e-mobility devices should be completed by a qualified professional

Discontinue using devices or batteries that have an unusual odor, change in color, too much heat, change in shape, are leaking, smoking, or not keeping a charge.
